The Lizzie Borden Murder CaseExcept for the Lincoln assassination, the most notorious murder case in 19th century America was the double murder in 1892 which may have been committed by Lizzie Borden, a young woman in Fall River, Massachusetts. As a popular and grisly playground rhyme began, "Lizzie Borden took an axe, and gave her mother 40 whacks..." The morbid poem was inaccurate in several respects, but Lizzie's father and his wife were indeed murdered in horrible fashion, most likely by strikes from an axe.Lizzie was arrested and put on trial. Newspapers transmitted every detail as high-powered legal talent battled it out. And in the end Lizzie Borden was acquitted.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA—Why do teens—especially adolescent males—commit crimes more frequently than adults. One explanation may be that as a group, teenagers react more impulsively to threatening situations than do children or adults, likely because their brains have to work harder to rein in their behavior, a research team reported here yesterday at the Society for Neuroscience meeting.Whether it's driving too fast on a slick road or experimenting with drugs, teenagers have a reputation for courting danger that is often attributed to immaturity or poor decision-making. If immaturity or lack of judgment were the only problem, however, one would expect that children, whose brains are at an even earlier stage of development, would have an equal or greater penchant for risk-taking, says Kristina Caudle, a neuroscientist at the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City who led the study.

But this year, I have reason to pause, as the 2010 Amendments to UCC Article 9, which have been adopted by more than 40 states (but not NY (and some others)—as of yet) went into effect on July 1, 2013.By way of background, UCC Article 9 governs secured transactions in personal property (i.e., how security interests may be obtained in a debtor’s personal property to secure a debt).

News articles about deportation

Otis Bolamu is from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and says he would be imprisoned by the DRC government, whom he worked for, if he returned because of his opposition to them and his work on fair and open elections. He came to the UK this year after hearing that he was being suspected of spying on the government and is a member of the political movement Apareco in the UK, one of the main Congolese opposition groups here. The Home Office were planning to deport Bolamu on Christmas Day after taking him into detention at 4am on 19th December from Swansea to Brook House near Gatwick, ready to put him on a plane on the 25th. Otis Bolamu is a practising Christian, actively involved in his local church and was planning to spend Christmas Day with his church friends.A petition set up for him says: "All he wants is to be able to worship at his church on Christmas Day. Instead, he is being sent into harm's way, with unseemly haste, on the most sacred of all days for Christians, whilst the rest of us will be celebrating."This is a cruel example of the hostile environment at work. Such an action is not at all compatible with the Christmas message of love and compassion."The petition currently has 8,301 signatures to protect him from further deportation, signed by many people from Hay Festival and Oxfam where he volunteered. Adam Price, the leader of the Welsh party, Plaid Cymru, wrote a letter to the Home Secretary Sajid Javid, saying: "Though the speed and manner of Mr Bolamu's deportation are an affront to most people's sense of justice and due process, the fact that he is due to be forcibly removed on a day that celebrates the birth of the most notable asylum seeker in history is to many a symbol of an immigration policy that is both inhumane and, in terms of morality, un-Christian."Our leader @Adamprice has written to @sajidjavid to ask him to intervene urgently and personally to prevent the imminent deportation of #OtisBolamu. pic.twitter.com/KTKUkokm0s— Plaid Cymru (@Plaid_Cymru) December 24, 2018The group Stand Up To Racism (SUTR) told their supporters on Facebook that his immediate deportation had been cancelled: "Over 6000 signed an online petition in only a few hours, a hastily organised protest in Swansea City centre was well attended and local figures including MPs and AMs all put out statements of support."We still wait to hear if the deportation order has been totally cancelled or just postponed, and if Otis is to be released, so we need to continue to keep up the momentum against what must be one of the cruellest examples of May's 'hostile environment'."The Swansea branch of SUTR stated that Mr Bolamu will unlikely be deported for at least three months. Stay up to date with the latest news stories from a Christian perspective. Sign up to our daily newsletter and receive more stories like this straight to your inbox every morning..

Mercedes changed “almost every square millimetre” of its initial 2019 launch car with the updated aerodynamic concept it introduced during the second week of Formula 1 pre-season testing. The reigning world champion outfit debuted a heavily-revised aero package - featuring a new front wing design and noticeable tweaks to other major components - for the final week of testing in Barcelona in a fresh push for added performance ahead of the new season. Drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas reported encouraging progress with the team’s upgraded W10, which Mercedes plans to use for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix before continuing to develop the philosophy further throughout the 2019 campaign. Speaking in a video that compares Mercedes’ latest challenger - seen in its original launch-spec - with its predecessor, the W09, technical director James Allison said: “As excited as we are about this car, and we truly are excited about it, we know too that almost every square millimetre of this one is going to change once again by the time we get to the first race in Melbourne.“Because the rate of aerodynamic change at the moment with this new regulation is very rapid, meaning this launch car will be replaced by a whole new set of clothes, that we will take to Melbourne and then keep developing throughout the whole year.”Allison explained how Mercedes had taken great “pride” in the design process of its 2019 car, which he said had started to make the W09 look “clumsy and naive by comparison” due to the new aerodynamic regulations introduced for this year. “As in any year, we are trying to design a car that is not just reacting to the regulation changes but is taking every single opportunity to make the car quicker,” he added. “We’ve done that on every teeny tiny part of the car, trying to get every bit pushed the to the limits of what we can get away with. "It's an interesting thing that things we thought last year were a source of great pride to us that we thought we had pushed to the very limit, start to look clumsy and naive by comparison."Take last year's sidepods as an example, they were something we made quite a big fuss about because they were tighter than we'd ever managed to make them in any previous year."But look at these sidepods [on the 2019 car], look at this bodywork, and it is just vacuum-wrapped to the car in a way that we just wouldn't have thought possible 12 months earlier. Similarly on the front suspension, we've been able to lift them further."The same is true everywhere, if you were to take the skin off this car and look underneath it you'd find that in every part of the car it's been just pushed a tighter, made a bit stiffer, made a bit lighter and just bought more performance."Two silver @F1 siblings, side by side.

Scientific article critiques

Posted on by Mezimuro

Criticism of science addresses problems within science in order to improve science as a whole and its role in society. Philosophical critiquesPhilosopher of sciencePaul Feyerabend advanced the idea of epistemological anarchism, which holds that there are no useful and exception-free methodological rules governing the progress of science or the growth of knowledge, and that the idea that science can or should operate according to universal and fixed rules is unrealistic, pernicious and detrimental to science itself.1] Feyerabend advocates a democratic society where science is treated as an equal to other ideologies or social institutions such as religion, and education, or magic and mythology, and considers the dominance of science in society authoritarian and unjustified.1] He also contended (along with Imre Lakatos) that the demarcation problem of distinguishing science from pseudoscience on objective grounds is not possible and thus fatal to the notion of science running according to fixed, universal rules.1]Feyerabend also criticized science for not having evidence for its own philosophical precepts.

What was an accomplishment of the united states under the articles of confederation

Posted on by Tohn

The Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union was an agreement among the 13 original states of the United States of America that served as its first constitution.1] It was approved, after much debate (between July 1776 and November 1777), by the Second Continental Congress on November 15, 1777, and sent to the states for ratification. The Articles of Confederation came into force on March 1, 1781, after being ratified by all 13 states. A guiding principle of the Articles was to preserve the independence and sovereignty of the states.

Environmental pollutants continue to be a major global concern. However, thanks to the evolution of bioremediation technology, we are able to diminish some of the damaging effects that these pollutants have had on our environment. The following 3 examples will help you gain a better understanding of bioremediation and its uses. Bioremediation is the process of using biological organisms to break down hazardous substances into less toxic or nontoxic substances. According to Cornell University, “Bioremediation provides a technique for cleaning up pollution by enhancing the same biodegradation processes that occur in nature.” Although bioremediation happens naturally over time, scientists have developed ways to speed up the process through bioremediation technology.3 Examples of BioremediationSure, you probably learned about bioremediation in your high school science class.

Deaf community articles

By Michael Barba on February 3, 2019 1:00 amSan Francisco police plan to equip officers with a new tool for interacting with people who are deaf or hard of hearing following complaints over communication barriers between officers and the deaf community. The San Francisco Police Department is expected to install a video-chatting application on the cellphone of officers this year that will essentially bring an American Sign Language interpreter to the scene of a crime.Police brass have already rolled out the Language Line Solutions app to officers at Ingleside Station and a few at Mission Station as part of a pilot program, according to police Cmdr. David Lazar. The tool is also currently available at each police station as well as at the Special Victims Unit and the San Francisco International Airport, but never before have officers been able to videochat with interpreters in the field.“It’s really our way of trying to increase the level of service we provide the community in terms of language access,” Lazar said. “This enables us to have language not be a barrier.”Officers would use the app as part of a new policy for communicating with the deaf victims, witnesses or perpetrators of crimes that the Police Commission is soon expected to vote on.The proposed policy is expected to include step-by-step procedures for officers to follow when interacting with people who are deaf or hard of hearing, such as a reference guide to use during traffic stops. The changes are part of larger efforts to close language barriers between police and the community.

I recently shared with my pastors that I attended a course in which the instructor encouraged the class of music directors to view ourselves not merely as musicians, but rather as “church” musicians. One of my pastors responded by suggesting that the word “churchman” should be reflected in any such description, while the other recommended “chief musician” as an appropriate designation. While the question over the best title is debatable, these gentlemen reveal a similar concern that the church musician is not simply performing music, but is ministering through music.I am quite confident that these same gentlemen also agree that only ordained ministers are to lead worship.

Industrial relations articles in malaysia

Posted on by Gulabar

The debate over the appropriate role for workers in organizational decision making is part of a larger debate over the extent of the firm’s responsibilities to its community and society. This debate has been going on since the days of the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution brought about great accumulations of wealth and also focused public attention on the apparent negative effects of rapid industrialization on working people. To what extent workers in the new factories were worse off than they had been in the much smaller-scale cottage industries may be a matter of continuing debate, but there is no question that large concentrations of workers—men, women, and children—crowded together in factories and working long hours for low pay made health and social problems much more publicly visible.

Journal article on existentialism

Posted on by Gardakazahn

"Existential" redirects here. For the logical sense of the term, see Existential quantification. For other uses, see Existence (disambiguation). Not to be confused with Essentialism.Existentialism ()1] is a tradition of philosophical inquiry associated mainly with certain 19th and 20th-century European philosophers who, despite profound doctrinal differences,2]3]4] shared the belief that philosophical thinking begins with the human subject—not merely the thinking subject, but the acting, feeling, living human individual.5] While the predominant value of existentialist thought is commonly acknowledged to be freedom, its primary virtue is authenticity.6] In the view of the existentialist, the individual's starting point is characterized by what has been called "the existential attitude", or a sense of disorientation, confusion, or dread in the face of an apparently meaningless or absurd world.7] Many existentialists have also regarded traditional systematic or academic philosophies, in both style and content, as too abstract and remote from concrete human experience.8]9]Søren Kierkegaard is generally considered to have been the first existentialist philosopher,2]10]11] though he did not use the term existentialism.12] He proposed that each individual—not society or religion—is solely responsible for giving meaning to life and living it passionately and sincerely, or "authentically".13]14] Existentialism became popular in the years following World War II, and strongly influenced many disciplines besides philosophy, including theology, drama, art, literature, and psychology.15]EtymologyThe term "existentialism" (French: L'existentialisme) was coined by the French Catholic philosopher Gabriel Marcel in the mid-1940s.16]17]18] At first, when Marcel applied the term to him at a colloquium in 1945, Jean-Paul Sartre rejected it.19] Sartre subsequently changed his mind and, on October 29, 1945, publicly adopted the existentialist label in a lecture to the Club Maintenant in Paris.

The Truth About Love at First SightTags:relationships, love at first sight, resolutionsKeen Category:Love AdviceWhen you’re looking for a quote on the subject of love, there’s no one more prolific than William Shakespeare. So of course, when it comes to the topic of love at first sight, one could certainly expect him to weigh in with an opinion. Sure enough, in Act III, Scene IV of As You Like It, the Bard describes the momentous meeting of his star-crossed lovers Orlando and Rosalind: “Who ever loved that loved not at first sight?” (Sure, he actually lifted that line from the pen of his contemporary, poet Christopher Marlowe, but it’s all in how history remembers...sorry, Kit.)So it seems, that if it were put to a vote, Shakespeare would be in the “Yes, love at first sight does exist” contingent.
